However, a doctoral candidate has been working on a way around that. Using multiple lasers and a sensitive acoustic microphone, he can "listen" to terahertz signals from distances up to 11 m. It's a technique he calls "Terahertz Enhanced Acoustics."

Success with orthodontic braces depends mainly upon the experience level of the orthodontist, says this article. Currently, the stress that the braces apply to teeth is measured with a simple spring scale that makes only a one-dimensional measurement. Now, researchers have come up with "intelligent" orthodontic braces incorporating built in stress sensors, so orthodontists can measure the forces exerted upon individual teeth in two dimensions.
